TWD/BWJ Buttermilk Crumb Muffins or Grand Canyon Cakes
My apologies to this wonderful baking group. Something went wrong, terribly wrong. I followed the recipe I didn't mind that the recipe called for Crisco, I didn't mind that it seemed to have plenty of sugar. I just feel bad that they look like the Grand Canyon! I'll blame it on the altitude. When you live at 5000 feet you can do that. It's nice to have somewhere to place the blame. But they did taste wonderful!
Will I make them again and try and figure out what went wrong? Probably not. I'll just move on, there are so many recipes to try. But to all those who think everything I make is wonderful--here is proof, sometimes scary things come out of the oven!
Please check the TWD blogroll, I'm sure there are better photos of this recipe. Alisa will have the complete recipe on her blog. Like I said--they do taste good!
Sometimes, baked goods just have a mind of their own. As long as they tasted good, that's all that matters.
ReplyDeleteGully. Gulch. Crevice. Those are all the words I used to describe mine as well. I didn't think of the Grand Canyon :-)
ReplyDeleteFOrtunately, these were tastier than they looked.
It makes me feel better to know you have a few cooking experiences like the rest of us :)
ReplyDeleteMy husband is very gratious and says he likes overcooked edges.
He's the guy to find if the toast gets burnt.
He would have gobbled those up in minutes!
something must have gone wrong with the oven or with the baking powder.. and plus you bake at an altitude.. having had my fair share of baking disasters.. i can totally understand how you are feeling!! atleast they tasted good.. some of my epploits have made their way staright to the garbage bin!!
ReplyDeleteCher had the same problem, I wonder what it was... But if you liked their taste then you can be happy with them! I understand why you wouldn´t want to make them again and see what happens. So many recipes to make before right? Have a nice day!
ReplyDeleteAs long as they tasted good! I made little mini muffins!
ReplyDeleteI've so sorry for your sink holes...but glad they still tasted OK. On to the next recipe :)
ReplyDeleteCindy, your post made me smile - I love the fact that you compared your Buttermilk Crumb Muffins to the "Grand Canyon". And I am glad that they tasted wonderful despite their shy appearance! And thank you so much for your lovely comment on my blog - I love that you read to your grandkids in person and via skype! Terrific!
ReplyDeleteHave a wonderful week!
Mine sank a little tiny but not too much. I do think they taste good!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this. Makes us all not feel so alone when things don`t turn out. Some of my muffins did that too. Very strange indeed.
ReplyDeleteSo, this is the famous Grand Canyon! I've been going through the LYL list and after seeing your comments curiosity took over...
ReplyDeleteSeeing the glass half full, I dare say that it's better to bake delicious muffins that look like "one of the most visited places in the world",
than to bake a masterpiece that taste bad...
Let's blame the altitude! Yeah!
my vegan version resembled your muffins-it was a larger than necessary amount of liquid and not altitude to blame. thanks for baking along!
ReplyDeleteI love how you dubbed your batch "Grand Canyon Muffins." I'm glad they still tasted good! :)
ReplyDeleteoh wow! what happened?! I'm sure they taste just as yummy. And I'm sure you can fill those holes with something, like jam, Nutella, Biscoff???
ReplyDeleteLove that you named them Grand Canyon Cakes! The indentation is the perfect vessel for a little dollop of ice cream or whipped cream and serve for dessert!
ReplyDeleteSorry that your muffins sank.. Thanks for sharing the experience though, sometimes one have no idea what went wrong with perfectly straight forward recipe.. It happens to me too once in a while..
ReplyDeleteI thought these weren't until next week since we just did a rewind last week. But I keep thinking of my friend, Paige's post from a couple years ago where she has adapted this recipe and she talks all about different leaveners. When I try the muffins, (next week?) I plan to really study Paige's post. http://www.forloveofthetable.com/2011/01/buttermilk-crumb-muffins-and-some.html ('Course I agree about high altitude issues and not sure about adjustments for muffins.)
ReplyDeleteOh, well, at least they tasted good! Glad to see a baking rendition of the Grand Canyon :)
ReplyDeleteMine did this until the last 5 minutes of baking. I was very nervous.
ReplyDeleteoh no... I am sorry yours ended up like that. Hope they tasted good
ReplyDeleteIt must be the altitude! Luckily, I'm sure it didn't affect the taste :-)
ReplyDeleteJust remember Looks aren't everything!
ReplyDeleteI bet they tasted exactly as they should
Half of mine sunk in the middle too. I was wondering if maybe the topping was too heavy.
ReplyDeleteThe new name has a nice ring to it... maybe you can fill them with some apple jam or something? ...Then tell people it was done on purpose ;-)
